Listen and learn from Don Powers, Founder of Fitness Machine Technicians, plus hear the advice of Karen Murray with Powers Brand Communications on how to maximize a franchisee’s visibility.

Currie:  What do you attribute to your significant growth?

Powers: The growth has come because of the style of the business. It’s a service business, it’s need-based, it’s low cost. It can be a home-based business. Recurring revenue is huge in our business. So, getting those preventative maintenance contracts with commercial clients and residential clients can really build a business.

Currie: How do you think you’ve disrupted the marketplace?

Powers: I don’t think we disrupted the marketplace. I would say that we are organizing it. This industry segment is mostly run by mom and pops, which is okay. My vision is to treat the business as a true business. Our franchisees are from the business world.

Currie: Would you give some examples of how to maximize that grand opening?

Murray: We have a grand opening campaign for each FMT franchisee. I get on the phone with the franchisee and hear their story. It’s nice to have that human connection to see the face behind the business.

Currie: Once you start creating visibility. How do you sustain the momentum?

Murray: There’s a number of different ways. The opening is the kickoff to help build awareness and ultimately drive business. One thing we noticed is that people are googling, “fix my treadmill,” and apartment complexes are looking for a reliable repair person. We want to be the answer to search queries. Digital marketing tactics have great ways to target your audience. We also encourage sponsoring a local event, getting involved with a nonprofit and a traditional public relations approach with media relations.
