FEATURED FRANCHISE CONSULTANT: Ed Ranieri, FranServe, Inc.

A Passion For Helping Others

Ed Ranieri grew up in franchising, and his earliest memories of the industry date back to when he was about eight years old.

“My dad and uncle owned a ServiceMaster franchise in Cleveland, and I loved riding around in that bright yellow van with them,” Ranieri said. “We’d deliver supplies, check on jobs and visit crews, and sometimes I’d stay and help, carrying buckets of water, bringing lunch to the guys or doing whatever an eight-year-old could do to feel useful and be part of what was going on.”

At the end of those workdays, Ranieri said they’d stop for a milkshake and talk about the day. His father would count out a few dollar bills and pay him for a day’s work.

“Looking back now, there’s something pretty special about the whole picture,” said Ranieri. “I was sitting in a ServiceMaster van, drinking a McDonald’s milkshake underneath the golden arches, learning some of my earliest lessons about hard work and earning a dollar. I didn’t understand it at the time, but I was quite literally surrounded by franchising, so maybe it’s not entirely coincidental that franchising ultimately became such a significant part of my life.”

After high school, Ranieri went directly to work with his dad and, over 15 years, he became deeply invested in the disaster restoration business.

“That business took me across the country responding to hurricanes, wildfires, mudslides and other major catastrophes,” he said. “It was incredibly demanding work, but it also gave me the opportunity to help a lot of people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

Ranieri even developed and starred in Catastrophe Inc., a reality television series about the disaster restoration industry that aired on HGTV.

“It was certainly an unusual chapter in my career but another experience that taught me a tremendous amount about business, people and operating under pressure,” he continued.

He sold his ServiceMaster business and moved to South Carolina with his wife and two children where he owned and operated a Pillar to Post Home Inspectors franchise for five years. Ranieri then began working with a franchise consultant, exploring his next chapter, when he realized he wanted to help others navigate their own journey into business ownership.

“In many ways, franchise consulting gave me the opportunity to do something I’d already been doing throughout my career: share what I’d learned with others. It just gave me a new platform from which to do it,” he explained.

Ranieri, who founded Teach Franchising over six years ago, said one of the most rewarding parts of franchise consulting is sharing his experience with others.

“My dad taught me that all the knowledge we accumulate is worthless unless we’re willing to share it with others,” he said. “The more experience I accumulated, the more I understood exactly what he meant: experience earned, knowledge shared. In many ways, it’s simply a modern expression of something my dad taught me a long time ago. At this stage of my career, I can’t think of a better or simpler way to describe what I’m trying to do.”
